A monthly injection of Adequan (in the muscle) is nearly comparable to hock injections. I have a 15 year ancient jumper mare and I also am not a fan of hock injections. I have her on Adequan as well as a joint supplement and she has no issues.
FYI, this is the supplement I have her on. http://www.smartpakequine.com/ProductClass.aspx?productclassid=7186 I chose it because she eats it, but there are lots out there that are less expensive and probably just as effective.
ADD: I just remembered, I had the acupuncturist out a couple of months ago and she was able to do a modest something to help the hock joints. But she also recommends keeping the horses on Adequan for maintenance. It’s a simple injection into the horse’s large neck muscle. If someone shows you how to do a muscle shot, you could straightforwardly do it yourself. Legend is an intraveneous injection, so unless you know how to give IV shots, or you want to pay a vet to do it each month, I would lean headed for Adequan.
Have you tried Glucosamine? Or Legend? Both products lube their joints up pretty well. I would certainly try those before hock injections. Legend is fantastic product overall. Many top level competitors use it on their horses. It would have to be administered by your vet. I have a 26yo polo pony still going strong. He gets Legend once a month. Makes all the difference.
Ive herd of a sims situation. Give her an ancient HMI (hot meat injection).
