when my ancient dog got ancient just let her do what she wanted to do each day and when she wanted to do it. she ate and did business and rested till the final day came. she was lucky, but.

  • Jacob B:

Just try to make it lucky for the rest of their life :(

My female shiba is 10, but no problems yet

Always remember that you too, will get ancient. That should help you keep it in perspective.

After bonding with a dog for over ten years, I can’t imagine not taking care of them in their ancient age.

I saw an article on Peta’s blog where she suggested one of those carts that problem onto the back of a bike. Usually kids sit in them. The writer let her dog ride along behind. So instead of jogging with him, she’d take him for bike rides. There’s always a way to negotiate.

My poodle Alexis is 11 yrs ancient. She gets Glucosamine everyday. Her walks are shorter and a modest slower. SHe still has all her senses and in general is in excellent health. I try not to reckon about her age because I get really sad. I just take the best care of her I can.

Small, slow walks – ideally on a nature trail, not a city street. I’ve establish that a squirrel scampering across a dirt path is very exciting for him!

Mine also *adores* car rides – he can sniff all the new smells and take pleasure in a breeze. Car rides tend to end with a trip to Petco – another exciting treat that is simple on the joints.

I also take him outside with me when I garden so he can get some fresh air. Even if he just sits there, he’s lucky :) I also drag the dog bed into the kitchen when I cook so he can smell and drool and remember when he could snarf down a whole meal when I was foolish enough to leave it on the counter.

He gets a modest splash of broth or similar on his kibble – it’s exciting for him. A special treat is a gravy made of steamed veggies pureed in the blender and poured on dry food.

Also, Ancient Dog got Young Dog as an early Christmas present :) THAT sure perked him up!

My philosophy is that Ancient Dog must get lots of intellectual stimulation – being exposed to new sights and smells, and given lots of time to just nose around and explore. It’s pretty simple to do.

We are extremely fortunate that he is in fantastic health – no bladder/bowel, sight, major joint, or other significant issues. The hearing is not as excellent as it was before – but it’s just as “selective.”

So I may have lost a jogging buddy…but I gained a finally-cool, finally-well behaved friend who appreciates the finer things in life :)

    mine is 13 blue heeler.
she goes outside in the day.
    and comes in at nighttime.
    she sees. has terrible cateracts.
loosing her hearing.(selective hearing like kids ahaha)
    and has nearly no teeth.
    she likes fortune cookies.
we got her senior dog treats and they are hard. it has vitimins in it too.
but all the senior dog food and treats are HARD. they are loosing their teeth they need to be soft.

They grow older quicker than us and now they cant do what they did a few years so now we must care for them like we would for a seniorparents, grandparents and so on.Mine is 15 has arthritis, degenerative myelopathy. But i had him since 6wks and wont abadonded him now. he use to like going in the car now he despises it.

You need to spend more time with it,trying to show it that you like it anyway.Dogs are like humans in some ways. They feel useless. We lost a 16 year ancient Shih Tzu in 2005.She was a house dog but she had distress moving from one room to the other. She wanted in our laps but couldn’t get there a lot of time.We regretted not spending more time with her after she died.

When my best girl Buffy was aging, painful hips, etc, I’d just lay in the sun with her. I got a used baby stroller and take her for w walk and let her ride. I just slowed down a modest bit for her becasue we had 11 GREAT years collectively. Our family loved hiking and Buffy always came with us. We gave her meds for the arthritis, she had a cancer tumor removed and when she lost her skill to stay up on her feet at age 13, we helped her cross the Rainbow Join. She was a chow mixed breed.

  • Buddy28:

My Buddy is 15. He’s nearly deaf and has arthritis and hip dysplasia. Other than that, he’s pretty healthful and his mind is still as sharp as ever. He takes glucosamine and the anti-inflammatory Deramaxx. That helps him through the everyday aches and pains and keeps him pretty mobile. He has excellent days and terrible days and he’s not able to do some of the things he used to, but he likes just going along and keeping me company. He’s an incredible dog and even though his health has gotten more fragile as he’s gotten older, I really reckon our friendship has gotten much deeper. Older dogs are just special, I reckon. It’s really a gift to have a friend who knows and likes you like that.

  • walking lady:

I have an 11 year ancient greyhound who’s on daily glucosamine, gets massaged daily and sometimes iced on the shoulder he has arthritis in, his walks are certainly shorter now than they used to be, BUT he’s certainly not losing his senses nor his energy. He has periods each day where he plays “chase” with the now 5 month ancient belgian shepherd puppy, he chews bones, plays with toys, he learned a new skill – “search” at the age of 10, so while he enjoys even more clasp time on the couch than he did when he was 3, this senior is still loving life.

My nearly 8 year ancient greyhound who has epilepsy and who’s kidney’s are failing has all her joy and exuberance still intact and bounds around outside like a puppy!

Neither of my seniors realize they’re seniors – it’s right what they say – you’re only as ancient as you feel!

You care for them by making their walks a modest shorter, making their beds a modest softer, their diet as excellent as you can, and teaching them new things to keep their brains active and their life fun to keep them as young as possible.
