Try considering a physiatrist; Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. They can help you manage your pain while treating the underlying shape up with both new and conventional treatment methods and options.

  • Dr Tim:

It sounds like you have degenerative arthritis (also called osteoarthritis) in your lumbar spine. This is a wear and tear type of arthritis that regularly occurs as a result of structural stress on the joint. The pain in your leg likely is from compromised (pinched) nerves exiting from the lower back and traveling down the legs.
When there is structural pressure on the spine from falls, accidents or posture the discs in between the 24 vertebrae bulge (herniate) like if you stepped on a water to the top balloon and tilted your foot it would bulge out one side. When this occurs over a period of time, to avoid repeated irritation to the nerves (that cause pain), your body deposits calcium to splint the area (seen on x-ray as spurs) and this is then called osteoarthritis or degenerative joint disease.
I have this shape up for myself and it’s improved noticeably with chiropractic care. In my work as a chiropractor for 30+ years I’ve seen many conditions like yours improve and the degeneration halted once the structural distortions are corrected. It’s the same as if your shoe is wearing out on one side, right the foot posture and the uneven wear stops.
I suggest you find a excellent chiropractor and see if they can right the cause of your problem. In the meantime educate yourself about the spine, the muscles that go it and find things you can do at home to help yourself. Try doing some stretches to see if they help. Regularly with this type of shape up you right what you’re able and manage the rest.I wish you well! Dr Tim
