Yes, your wife should avoid medications unless advise by her OB/GYN. You may let her try these methods to reduce pain.
1. Cognitive/behavioral techniques such as relaxation (include silent breathing, deep breathing, or progressive relaxation), distraction (i.e., focusing your attention on something else), and visualization (involves the use of a personal symbol to imagine the transformation of pain; for example, you might imagine the pain as a red hot fire and then visualize the pain diminishing as the fire is place out by water) and mind/body techniques (such as, Rumination).
2. Physiatric techniques include a variety of methods including electrical stimulation (such as PENS and TENS), skin stimulation, therapeutic exercise (include stretching, strengthening, and conditioning), and the use of orthoses (such as splint on a painful limb or a collar for patients with neck or back pain) and assistive devices (such as wraps, pressure stockings, or pneumatic pump devices).
3. Massage – you can add trembling (using devices) and/or heat (warm compress) to a massage.
4. Hypnosis – under hypnosis, a patient enters a state of deep relaxation and then is given simple suggestions to experience the pain in a different way.
5. Acupuncture – works by activating one’s own pain control system in the spinal cord and brain.
6. Heat and Cold – Heat may relieve sore muscles, while cold may numb the pain. For cold, try plastic gel packs that remain soft even when frozen. For both, do not use them for more than 10 minutes at a time.
7. Rumination – a form of mind-body medicine used to help relax the body and silent the mind. Rumination can be practiced as focusing attention on something, like a word or phrase, an oppose, or the breath. You wife may sit, lie down, walk, or be in any other position that makes them feel comfortable.
