well i don’t have arthritis but ia m a highly competitive runner and i always wait at least a week or two before running heavy again, give my muscles time to rest and recover from going all out. after you feel fit enough to start running i would start off on a ladder running program. like run 1 mile 3 times a week, 2 miles three times a week, then 3 miles three times a week. you can adapt it to your own preference but after a rest you don’t want to go back to running 26 miles. That is the best i can help you. hope it helped and congrats on dying a marathon.
It varies with the individual. First timers usually need more time than others, and it’s not at all unusual to outright take off a week or so.
Those who are more accustomed to marathoning can often even get out for a light run (or walk) within a day or, and find the superior circulation really speeds recovery.
It’s largely a listen-to-your-body thing. If you’re feeling stiff or hobbling around, don’t force anything or keep it to a walk at most. If you’re feeling up for a run, it’s okay to attempt one in recovery mode, but do keep in mind you’ll be more vulnerable to injury than usual, and likely to peter out of steam quicker than usual — certainly keep it an simple and relatively brief thing.
Anyway, if you want to take a week off, that’d be normal, but it’s not some fixed policy or anything. And for the next 30 days (roughly 1 day per mile raced) you should stay largely in a recovery mode and dodge all-out efforts or intense speedwork. Your body will still be repairing itself all through that time. Nothing incorrect with running all through that cycle — just vital to not push too hard or overdo it all through that time while you’re more susceptible.
