Are pain killers and a sedentary lifestyle a good treatment for fibromyalgia?
I accept that the pain and discomfort are real. But, long term, aren't the side effects of narcotic pain killers worse than the pain it masks? And is drug treatment a substitute for strengthening and muscle treatment?
Also, I know that former athletes have arthritis and other conditions caused by trauma. Are there any former pro athletes who have fibromyalgia?
The question is almost rhetorical. But, in my limited experience, all the people I know that have been diagnosed use it as an excuse to do nothing. When I suggested exercise the answer is "well I have to be real careful, it can cause it to act up". Ok, so if I go to the gym after not going for a while and try to break some lifting [...]
What can I expect with my first appointment with a Rheumatologist (I think I have fibromyalgia)?
I haven't had insurance for about 2 years, and I finally just got back on it. I've been suffering with moderate pain for at least a year, but since I didn't have insurance all this time there wasn't much I could do. I was able to do a consult online over the phone with a doctor, and they told me it wasn't an official diagnosis, but they thought I had Fibromyalgia and Osteoarthritis, and they gave me a prescription for Cymbalta, and Tramadol. They did inform me there was a risk involved taking the two drugs in conjunction but that it shouldn't be a problem. I took these for awhile, but had little luck with Cymbalta, so I discontinued that and I've just been taking the Tramadol as needed but [...]

Non-medicinal ways of helping my wife deal with Arthritis and Fibromyalgia pain while she is pregnant?
Hi. My wife has Arthritis and Fibromyalgia, both of which cause her extreme pain. In the past she has eased it some with the help of a muscle relaxant (Cyclobenzaprine) and a pain medication (Hydrocodone) that were prescribed to her. However, she is pregnant and both her OB/GYN and the Answers community advised us to take her off these medications at the very least until the baby is born since we obviously do not want them to affect our child negatively.
She is dealing with the pain better than she herself admitted, however she is still having a very hard time and sometimes the pain is so intense that she will cry a little and that causes pain on my end, albeit emotionally. I don't want [...]
