Many purebred dogs have genetic disorders depending on breed. It’s because many dogs are inbred and inbreeding causes genetic mutations. That’s why generally mutts are in excellent health dogs.

There’s no way to prevent your dog from getting something that it is genetically prone to getting. You just have to make sure your dog is eating healthfully and getting enough exercise…. and hope for the best.

yes, they are prone to several maladies of the spine. sometimes it is caused by injury, such as jumping off the bed..Often it is caused by life too stout, or under developed muscle tone..

So, the preventative, would be to keep them from jumping off high surfaces, and keep them trim and physically fit with regular exercise,,.
Feed the best dog food, for added skeletal strength and musculature….
many males develop this from the action of breeding, so a neutered dog’s health is safest from spinal injury or stress.

Well, yeah – but I’m not sure you can prevent it. It usually doesn’t show up in anticipation of pretty late in the dog’s life but it will be too soon for you.

Best thing is excellent food, plenty of activity, a excellent vet and lot’s of like.

It is hard to say an age at which time in the dog’s life this may happen because it may never happen.

Eight or ten years you may want to start paying closer attention. The fun loving dogs may try to hide the discomfort if they reckon you won’t walk them just because of a small limp. They do just the opposite sometimes and be converted into cranky and start nipping
